How Social Media is changing my personal Style

published 19.08.2024

Within my generation the use of social media has skyrocketed onto a level that needs to be further reflected on. Not only do we use social media to check up on the day-to-day of our besties, but also to get an insight on the “aesthetic” and “perfect” lives of complete strangers, we have never even met in real life. They show us what they eat, how they spent their time and, in this context, most importantly – what they wear.

Personally, TikTok and Instagram have played a huge role in my way of dressing. Back when I still had the apps installed, I followed all the brands, the fashion magazines, celebrities and influencers. So, every day, I would be confronted with new needs and wants from all those accounts, marketing them in a precise manner to make me consume as much content as possible. This led me to never being satisfied with my current closet situation and “ootd”.

This dissatisfaction also spread over way more than just my clothing. My entire appearance became a game of “never good enough”. Both mentally and physically there always seemed to be someone with a flatter tummy, clearer skin, longer hair, the perfect necklace, a new designer bag or simply a better life than me. I felt that this comparison left me uninspired and somehow creatively burned out.

By making the conscious decision to delete my social media, I tried to get myself back, to figure out what I like myself without anyone recommending, guiding or directing my choices. To come back to my initial statement, my style has become a true reflection of me. I wear what I feel most confident and comfortable in, I cycle through my favorite outfits without feeling the need to own any new garments.

The outfits reflect my emotional household of the day, sometimes very “cunty”, “slaying”, “serving” and at other times more comfy, peaceful and flowy. Now my main influence for my daily fit comes from feelings and the weather – sun means color, clouds mean nude tones and rain always calls for a chunky sweater.

If I could give you one suggestion to “find” your personal style, then I would recommend a big social detox session. See what you always feel your prettiest in, what looks best in your eyes and what suits your life most. In the end we are all gorgeous in our own way. This way should be a reflection of yourself and not turn into a mirror of suggestions from strangers that you only know through pixels.
